Dereham Memorial Hall, where most of our productions are performed

Dereham Operatic Society is a charitable Trust and was formed in 1948 to offer the local community education and enlightenment in amateur dramatic arts. A very grand way of saying that DOS was formed to entertain the people of Dereham and Norfolk!

Our Shakespearian motto "Mere folk who give distraction are we" comes from Cole Porter's musical "Kiss Me Kate", which we first performed in 1970, and is based upon one of William Shakespeare's most famous plays "The Taming of the Shrew".

We at Dereham Operatic Society, or DOS as we are affectionately known, stage three productions a year including a major musical in the autumn, a pantomime over the Christmas period and a play in the spring. So, as you can see, there is something for everyone.

If you are looking to join one of the premier operatic and dramatic societies in Norfolk as either a performer (we actively encourage all whatever your ability or experience, whether you are a singer, an actor, dancer, or just enjoy being on stage), backstage helper, front of house staff or just looking to purchase some tickets for our next show ........ you need look no further than the Dereham Operatic Society.

EDP Review

29th December 2008

There was more than a little irony that Dereham's annual panto opened as the town's Woolworths store was shutting down.

In their own way both have become institutions - and both seem to have always been there.

But while Woolies has paid the price for perhaps being too predictable and not moving with the times, the well worn and yet well loved formula is exactly what keeps panto so popular.

A very healthy opening day audience lapped up the corny old jokes and witty one-liners, courtesy of Dereham Operatic Society.

The youngsters - and not so young-sters - loved shouting at the entertaining-as-ever dame Nurse Dottie Dettol (Tony Wilds) and at the enthusiastic and energetic Muddles (Gareth Evans).

The boos and hisses at the Bad Witch Hazel (Emma Gall) had the same gusto as there would have been in the early days of panto. And of course the kids delighted in yelling "oh no he isn't" at every opportunity and going on to the stage to join in the traditional end of show song. Sleeping Beauty followed the story we all know so well, with a few clever adaptations and the role of Princess Rose was shared by Rachael Bird and Carmel Hannant to reflect her at two different ages - both gave sparkling performances.

In such a changing world with so many rivals in the entertainment world, panto really shouldn't succeed.

But thankfully DOS has again proved that it is alive and kicking.
