Dereham Memorial Hall, where most of our productions are performed

Dereham Operatic Society is a charitable Trust and was formed in 1948 to offer the local community education and enlightenment in amateur dramatic arts. A very grand way of saying that DOS was formed to entertain the people of Dereham and Norfolk!

Our Shakespearian motto "Mere folk who give distraction are we" comes from Cole Porter's musical "Kiss Me Kate", which we first performed in 1970, and is based upon one of William Shakespeare's most famous plays "The Taming of the Shrew".

We at Dereham Operatic Society, or DOS as we are affectionately known, stage three productions a year (not including the productions of our youth group) including a major musical in the autumn, a pantomime over the Christmas period and a play in the spring. So, as you can see, there is something for everyone.

If you are looking to join one of the premier operatic and dramatic societies in Norfolk as either a performer (we actively encourage all whatever your ability or experience, whether you are a singer, an actor, dancer, or just enjoy being on stage), backstage helper, front of house staff or just looking to purchase some tickets for our next show ........ you need look no further than the Dereham Operatic Society.

A quick peek at our Past Productions page will reveal that it has been no less than 30 years since we last put on this theatre-goers' favourite and so we thought it was about time we dusted off our checked-shirts and chaps and enjoyed another hoe-down with Aunt Eller and the folks of Oklahoma!

For Sing-through and Audition information please see the Members' Page for this production.

Further details will follow in due course, but in the meantime here's a short summary to inspire you;

Set in a Western Indian territory just following the turn of the century, the high-spirited rivalry between local farmers and cowboys provides a colourful background against which Curly McLain, a handsome cowboy, and Laurey Williams, a winsome farm girl, play out their love story.  We know that the road to true love never runs smooth and with these two headstrong romantics holding the reins, love’s journey is as bumpy as a surrey ride down a country road, pot-holed by the sinister farm hand, Jud Fry.

Meanwhile, the musical comedy comes thick and fast in the form of an unlikey love-triangle between Ado Annie (a flirtatious, and perhaps gullible young woman), the simple young cowboy, Will Parker, and a Persian peddler named Ali Hakim.

Loved the world over, Oklahoma! has a positive wealth of songs that you know and love, including "Oh, What A Beautiful Mornin’" , "The Surrey With The Fringe On Top", "I Cain’t Say No", "People Will Say We’re In Love" and of course the title track itself, "Oklahoma!"
