Dereham Memorial Hall, where most of our productions are performed

Dereham Operatic Society is a charitable Trust and was formed in 1948 to offer the local community education and enlightenment in amateur dramatic arts. A very grand way of saying that DOS was formed to entertain the people of Dereham and Norfolk!

Our Shakespearian motto "Mere folk who give distraction are we" comes from Cole Porter's musical "Kiss Me Kate", which we first performed in 1970, and is based upon one of William Shakespeare's most famous plays "The Taming of the Shrew".

We at Dereham Operatic Society, or DOS as we are affectionately known, stage three productions a year including a major musical in the autumn, a pantomime over the Christmas period and a play in the spring. So, as you can see, there is something for everyone.

If you are looking to join one of the premier operatic and dramatic societies in Norfolk as either a performer (we actively encourage all whatever your ability or experience, whether you are a singer, an actor, dancer, or just enjoy being on stage), backstage helper, front of house staff or just looking to purchase some tickets for our next show ........ you need look no further than the Dereham Operatic Society.

For our spring play at Dereham Memorial Hall,

‘The Haunted Through Lounge and Recessed Dining Nook at Farndale Castle’ by David McGillivray and Walter Zerlin junior is the Society’s Play Production this Spring (Thursday 11 to Saturday 13 March). Hard on the heels of last year’s triumphant ‘Farndale Avenue Housing Estate Townswomens Guild Dramatic Society Murder/Mystery Play’, we progress from ruining Agatha Christie to doing our very best to destroy Hammer Horror.

Our plucky ladies clearly know their lines, but not necessarily the order in which to say them. Led by their perpetual leading lady, Thelma, and under the watchful eye of their indomitable Chairwoman, Mrs Reece, we guarantee that everything that could possibly go wrong will do exactly that, including missed cues, skipped pages, falling scenery and broken props.

The story has echoes of Rocky Horror as an innocent couple of teenager lovers eloping together break down outside a lonely castle. Little can they imagine the trials they will encounter at the hands of its strange owner Lady Madge, and her weird maid Crematoria, or what fate has in store as they wrestle with their destiny to unravel a family mystery.

A really strong cast includes Marea Smithson, Doug Hartley, Paul Gregory, Julie Hewitt, Marilyn Cara and Greg Reeve, and is directed by Tim Cara. The Farndales have now clocked up over 1000 productions from Perth to Perth, Canada to Canberra, and are classic comedies with their own place in theatre.

Last year’s Dereham Times reviewer wrote ‘ one man sitting in front of me was doubled up with laughter, at one point almost falling out of his chair…you’d have to go a long way to find more laughs.. (the) production doesn’t miss a trick’. This will be the final adult castshow before the Memorial Hall goes dark for a year for its long-awaited refurbishments, and is sure to be very popular.
